Comprehension Check

1. How does Tilloo manage to find his way to the ‘forbidden passage’?

Ans: While his father was enjoying a short rest at home, Tilloo managed to get hold of his security card. Then, evading his watchful mother’s eye, he made his way to the forbidden passage. A metal door barred his entry. However, he had watched his father slip the magic card into a slot. He did the same and the door opened noiselessly. He saw a well-lit passage. Snatching the card which had come out of another slot in the wall, Tilloo started his march along a gentle upward slope.

2. What did Tilloo hope to see once he emerged from his underground home?

Ans: Once he emerged from his underground home, Tilloo hoped to see the sun if it was day time or the stars, if it was night.

3. Why did Tilloo’s father advise him not to try to reach the surface of the planet?

Ans: Tilloo’s father advised him not to reach the surface of the planet as an ordinary person could not survive there. The reason for this was that the air at the surface was too thin to breathe and the temperature was so low that one could freeze to death.

4. What changes had occurred, which forced people to live in underground homes?

Ans: People were forced to live in underground homes because the sun, which had provided them with sustenance, had turned hostile. It changed only slightly, but the change was sufficient to upset the balance of nature on the planet. First the birds became extinct, then the animals and finally the fishes. The superior technology of human beings enabled them to survive underground.

Comprehension Check

1. Why was everyone in the Control Room greatly excited?

Ans: Everyone in the control room was greatly excited as they had spotted a dot, in an otherwise clear background, on the big TV screen. They thought it was a spacecraft, but decided that it required watching.

2. Was the spacecraft manned or unmanned? How do you know it?

Ans: The spacecraft was unmanned. Number One told the President that according to their reports the spacecraft did not contain living beings. They only had instruments.

3.What did Number One and Number Two suggest should be done about the alien spacecraft?

Ans: Number One suggested that they could totally destroy the spacecraft with their missiles, but they did not have the capacity to render those crafts un-operational in space. However, if they landed, they could render them ineffective anytime they chose.

Number Two suggested non-interference and passive observation. He said that they did not know anything about the power or the intentions of the senders of the space crafts. Thus, they should not reveal their existence. If they destroyed the spaceships or rendered them ineffective.

2. Where had the spacecraft come from?

Ans: The spacecraft had come from the Earth.

3. On which planet do Tilloo and his parents live?

Exercises

Discuss the following topics in groups.

1. If you had to live in a home like Tilloo’s, what parts of life would you find most difficult? What compensations might there be?

Ans: Living underground in artificial conditions without the light/warmth of the stars and the sun, must be very troublesome and dull. The only compensation for such a home is safety and security, controlled light, and heat.

2. What, if anything, might drive mankind to make their homes

underground?

Ans: Mankind might be forced to live underground if the living conditions on the surface of the planet become insupportable for life. Excessive heat or cold might be one such reason. Pollution of air, destruction of all plants and trees might lead to mankind living underground.

3. Do you think there is life on other planets? Can you guess what kind of people there may be on them? In what ways are they likely to be different from us?

Ans: Scientists are trying hard to find out if there is any form of life on planets around the sun. So far they have sent spacecraft to the moon and Mars, collected samples of soil, and taken snapshots. But they have not found definite proof of life on them. The kind of people, if they exist at all on any other planet, would be quite different from us. They must have adjusted themselves to a strange and unfriendly environment there.

NCERT Solutions for Class 7 English Chapter 7: An Overview

An Alien Hand is an entertaining novel by author astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar. The story explains why NASA's Viking mission failed to find life on Mars.

The story begins with a child, Tillu. Tillu lives under the surface of Mars along with his parents and others. Some of these people go to the surface and work by special routes. Tillu wants to know what's behind this path.

Tillu Goes the Secret Route

One day Tillu's father was taking a nap. Tilo got the chance and grabbed the father's security card. Tillu proceeded and crossed the gate. But soon the security equipment detected the unauthorized person and returned to his house holding Tillu. Tillu's mother became angry at Tillu.

The Truth Behind The Route

Tillu's father had awakened by now. Tillu’s Father told him that At first, their planet was good for survival. A small change in the Sun greatly affected the planet and made our life unfavourable. First, the birds die and then the fish. Since then we are all living under the planet. We have put machinery on the surface to support life. I go there to see them and repair them. The air there is very thin and the temperature is low there. I wear oxygen and suits to survive there. You cannot go on like this. If you want to make you grow up, you will have an alien spacecraft.

Alien SpaceCraft

The next day Tillu's father took Tillu to work together. It was a great day for Tillu. But unexpectedly, there was a large crowd there. They came to know that two alien spacecraft were approaching the planet and all the staff was watching it on the display screen.

Soon landed on a planet. The announcement of the president came. His team consisted of a defence in-charge (No. 1), a committee of scientists (No. 2), and a social scientist (No. 3).

Tillu pressed the red button. A mechanical arm slowly came out of the vehicle and started collecting mud. Tillu was finding the red button on the control room quite intriguing. His father saw this and tried to stop Tillu. But by then it was too late, Tillu had pressed the button.

NASA's MARS space-mission  (NASA was holding a press conference on Earth at the time. He announced that his plane had stopped working.) Tillu's father gently pushed the button to Neutralize the situation.

FAQs on NCERT Solutions For Class 7 English Chapter 7 An Alien Hand - 2025-26

1. What were the conditions on Mars that forced Tilloo and his family to live underground in Chapter 7, 'An Alien Hand'?

In the story, the conditions on the surface of Mars became uninhabitable. The sun, which once provided life, had turned hostile. This slight change in the sun was enough to upset the planet's natural balance. As a result:

  • First, the birds became extinct.

  • Then, the animals and fish could no longer survive.

  • To survive, the inhabitants had to use their superior technology to build and live in underground colonies under artificial conditions.

2. How should a student correctly answer the NCERT question about Tilloo’s father's work?

To correctly answer the question about Tilloo's father's work, a student should mention that his father was part of a team responsible for maintaining the life-support systems of the underground colony. The correct method is to state that he went to work through a secret passage and his job was to ensure the machinery on the surface, which provided air, water, and heat, was always in working order. This was a critical and dangerous job that only a few trained individuals were allowed to do.

3. What were the main points of discussion in the Central Committee meeting about the alien spacecraft?

The Central Committee, led by Number One, discussed the two alien spacecraft approaching their planet. The key points of discussion were:

  • Observation vs. Action: Number One advised a passive, 'watch and wait' approach to avoid revealing their existence.

  • Non-Destruction: Number Two suggested they had the capacity to destroy the spacecraft but should refrain from doing so to avoid a potential attack.

  • Making it Ineffective: Number Three proposed a plan to make the spacecraft's instruments non-operational without destroying the craft itself, which was the final agreed-upon strategy.

4. What is the deeper meaning of the title 'An Alien Hand'?

The title 'An Alien Hand' has a dual meaning. On a literal level, it refers to the mechanical hand from the Viking 1 spacecraft that was trying to collect soil samples from Mars. However, on a deeper, more symbolic level, it represents the entire alien presence (from the perspective of Tilloo's people) and the unknown, potentially threatening intervention of an outside force in their world. It highlights the theme of how one group's exploration is another's 'alien' encounter.

5. Why was Tilloo's action of pressing the red button a significant event in the story?

Tilloo's action of pressing the red button was significant because it directly interfered with the alien spacecraft's mission. His innocent curiosity caused the spacecraft's mechanical hand to become inactive. This event was a turning point because it made the scientists at NASA believe there was a technical malfunction, rather than revealing the existence of life on Mars. In a way, Tilloo's impulsive action inadvertently helped protect his community's secret by making the 'alien' mission fail.

6. How does the story explore the theme of human curiosity versus the need for security?

The story explores this theme primarily through the character of Tilloo. His intense curiosity about the surface and his father's work drives him to break rules and enter forbidden areas. This curiosity represents a natural human desire to explore and understand. This contrasts with the community's strict rules and security measures, which are born out of the need for survival and protection from both the harsh surface environment and potential unknown threats like the alien spacecraft. Tilloo's actions highlight the constant tension between the drive for knowledge and the instinct for self-preservation.

7. What is the correct approach to solving the NCERT exercise questions for 'An Alien Hand' for the 2025-26 session?

The correct approach to solving the NCERT Solutions for 'An Alien Hand', as per the latest CBSE 2025-26 guidelines, is to first read the chapter thoroughly to understand the plot and characters. For comprehension questions, provide answers based directly on the text. For inferential or value-based questions, structure your answer by first stating your opinion and then supporting it with specific events or character actions from the story. A good solution will not only be factually correct but also demonstrate a clear understanding of the underlying themes.
