1. What is a “Dust of Snow”? What does the poet say has changed his mood? How has the poet’s mood changed? 

Ans: The tiny snowflakes or particles are called the "Dust of Snow." The abrupt downpour of snow dust altered the poet's disposition. The poet went from feeling down to joyful. He wanted to enjoy the remainder of the day as he felt renewed.

2. How does Frost present nature in this poem? The following questions may help you to think of an answer. 

(i) What are the birds that are usually named in poems? Do you think a crow is often mentioned in poems? What images come to your mind when you think of a crow? 

Ans: Poets typically choose birds and plants renowned for their beauty and virtues, such as peacocks, parrots, cuckoos, mynahs, and trees with abundant lovely fruits and flowers. However, Frost approached this quite differently. He selected a crow, an uncommon poetic subject. With its harsh voice and black colour, the crow is considered a terrible omen emblem. Crows evoke highly melancholy images in our minds.

(ii) Again, what is “a hemlock tree”? Why doesn’t the poet write about a more ‘beautiful’ tree such as a maple, an oak, or a pine?

Ans: Hemlock trees have tiny white blossoms and are deadly plants. Robert Frost, the poet, refrained from utilising an oak, maple, or pine tree. Rather, he left all the lovely trees in the world and went with the hemlock tree. He did this to express his emotions and attitude.

(iii) What do the ‘crow’ and ‘hemlock’ represent — joy or sorrow? What does the Dust of Snow that the crow shakes off a hemlock tree stand for? 

Ans: The hemlock tree and crow symbolise the poet's feelings of melancholy and unhappiness in this materialistic society. Snow dust represents innate happiness and vitality. The snow that a crow sweeps off a hemlock tree symbolises the passage from a time of sadness and melancholy to happiness and hope.

3. Have there been times when you felt depressed or hopeless? Have you experienced a similar moment that changed your mood that day?

Ans: I have experienced depression and hopelessness countless times. Such moments were triggered by my actions occasionally and by the actions and attitudes of others. One time, I was really angry. I ventured out for a stroll. I watched a female playing with a puppy in the park, giving him food and affection. Their small act of happiness lifted my attitude, and I felt joyous for the remainder of the day. I joined the two as well, and we played.
