Ans: Humans use trees in various ways – to get wood, to make tree houses, to get fruits, to get shade during the summers, for making swings, to play hide and seek, and for many other activities as well.

(i) “Trees are to make no shade in winter.” What does this mean? (Contrast this line with the line immediately before it)

(ii) “Trees are for apples to grow on, or pears.” Do you agree that one purpose of a tree is to have fruit on it? Or do you think this line is humorous?

Ans: 

(i) The line indicates that, during the winters, we use tree wood to build fire in order to keep ourselves warm. However, during the summers, the trees are often used to get protection from the sunlight as they provide cool shades.

(ii) Well, this line could be called humorous because the trees do let the fruits grow on themselves and the consumers of those fruits are people, who grow beneath them.

3. With the help of your partner, try to rewrite some lines in the poem, or add new ones of your own as in the following examples.

Trees are for birds to build nests in. Trees are for people to sit under.

Now try to compose a similar poem about water or air.

Ans: Trees give us delicious fruits. They take our tiredness away. They give us oxygen.

Water gives us life. We drink it and bathe in it. 

There is no life without water. So we should save every drop of it.
