FAQs on NCERT Solutions For Class 7 English Honeycomb Chapter 3 Gopal And The Hilsa Fish - 2025-26

1. What is the main story in NCERT Class 7 English Chapter 3, 'Gopal and the Hilsa Fish'?

The story is a comic that revolves around a wise courtier named Gopal. During the hilsa fish season, the king gets annoyed with everyone talking about it. He challenges Gopal to buy a huge hilsa fish and bring it to the palace without anyone asking him about the fish. The story cleverly shows how Gopal uses his wit to complete this seemingly impossible task.

2. Why did the king want no more talk about the hilsa-fish?

The king was tired of the constant discussions about the hilsa-fish happening everywhere, from the market to his own court. He felt it was a trivial topic and was distracting everyone, including his courtiers, from important state matters. His frustration led him to lose his temper and challenge Gopal to prove that it was possible to stop people from talking about it.

3. How did Gopal's strange appearance help him win the king's challenge?

Gopal cleverly shifted everyone's attention away from the fish by making himself the centre of attraction. He dressed in a ridiculous manner by:

  • Shaving off half his beard.
  • Smearing ash on his face.
  • Wearing torn and disgraceful rags.
His bizarre appearance was so distracting that people in the market and at the palace were more interested in his madness and funny attire than the large hilsa-fish he was carrying. This is how he won the challenge.
