Important Topics Covered under CBSE Class 10 Maths Chapter 7 - Coordinate Geometry

Coordinate geometry draws the linkage between geometry and algebra using various graphs and lines. Some of the concepts covered in this chapter are as follows

History of Coordinate Geometry

Coordinate geometry was first introduced by a French mathematician known as Rene Descartes; he was the first person to find a method to describe the location of points. Later in his research, he concluded that different curves and lines could be found using equations using coordinate geometry. He was the first person to draw the link between geometry and algebra. His work was considered extremely useful and to honour his work the coordinates of a point are called cartesian coordinates and the coordinate plane is known as the cartesian coordinate plane.

Coordinates

Coordinates are simply the various points on the plane. Using the x-axis and y-axis we can find out the exact location of the point. Because we are using a grid system it is much easier to locate anything because we just need to identify which cell( the intersection of rows and columns) the point falls.

Coordinate Plane

In coordinate geometry, there is a coordinate plane where different points are placed. There are usually two different scales- one with right angles to it is known as the y axis and the one running across from the plane is known as the x-axis. The point of origin is where both the x and y-axis meet and are known as the point of origin, this is usually at point 0.

Co coordinate geometry is quite simple, it uses pairs of numbers to give the location of a point on a plane.

Advantages of Coordinate Geometry

When we know the coordinates of certain points we can do the following- Determine the distance between them

  • We can find the equation, slope, and midpoint of any line segment.

  • We can find whether the lines are perpendicular or parallel.

  • Using the points we can find the perimeter and areas of any polygon.

  • By Reflecting, moving, and rotating we can transform any shape.

  • Define various eclipses, curves, and circles.

  • Find out the distances between different points, lines, and shapes.

Class 10 Maths Chapter 7 Important Questions

This chapter introduces students to coordinate geometry and students can study from this subject the very basics and get to a more intermediate level. The following are the important questions that students must look at when preparing for their examinations-

  1. There are two routes to use to travel from destination A to destination B. First Bus reaches via point C and the second bus reaches from A to B Directly. If Coordinates of A, B, and C are (-2,-3),(2,3), and (3,2) respectively then which bus do you want to travel from A to B? which value is depicted in the question.

  2. On a sports day celebration, Shyam and Ram are standing at positions A and B and their coordinates are (2,-2) and (4,8). The teachers ask Pooja to fix the flag at the midpoint of the line joining points A and B. Find the coordinates of the midpoint? Which type of value would you infer from the question?

  3. To raise awareness of the hazard of smoking and the harm it does to the body, a school decided to start a “ no smoking” campaign. 10 students are asked to prepare campaign flags in the shape of a triangle. If the costs of 1cm2 of each banner are 2 rupees then find the overall cost incurred in the campaign. Which value is depicted in the question?

  4. Find the area of a rhombus if its vertices are (3,0), (4,5),(-1,4) and (-2,-1) taken in the area.

  5. Find the centroid of a triangle whose vertices are(4,-8), (-9,7), and (8, 13).

  6. Prove that in a right-angled triangle the midpoint of the hypotenuse is in equal distance from all its vertices

  7. Prove that the diagonals of a rectangle bisect each other are all equal.

  8. The length of a line segment is 10. If one endpoint (2,-3) and the abscissa of the second endpoint is 10 shows that the ordinate is 3 or -9.

FAQs on CBSE Class 10 Maths Important Questions on Chapter 7 - Coordinate Geometry

1. What are the most important questions in Coordinate Geometry Class 10 for CBSE 2025–26 board exams?

The most important questions in Coordinate Geometry Class 10 often cover the following topics, as per CBSE 2025–26 exam weightage:

  • Finding the distance between two points using the distance formula
  • Determining the midpoint of a line segment
  • Applying the section formula to divide a segment in a given ratio
  • Calculating the area of a triangle given its vertices
  • Proving collinearity or specific geometric properties using coordinates
Prioritize practice on word problems and 3- or 4-mark HOTS questions derived from past exam trends.

2. How can I quickly identify 3-mark and 5-mark questions from Coordinate Geometry in Class 10 board papers?

CBSE typically assigns 3-mark questions for direct application of distance, midpoint, or section formulas, and 5-mark questions for combined or value-based problems. For example:

  • 3-mark: Find the area of a triangle with given vertices.
  • 5-mark: Prove a geometric property (like collinearity or equal distance) or solve a value-based context using coordinate methods.
Always read the question stem for action verbs like 'find', 'prove', or 'justify' to identify question type.

3. Why is the section formula often considered a high-frequency topic in Coordinate Geometry important questions?

The section formula appears in important questions because it assesses students’ conceptual understanding and calculation skills. CBSE exams frequently test:

  • Dividing a line segment into a given ratio (internally or externally)
  • Finding unknown coordinates using section logic
  • Applications in geometry (like centroids or midpoints)
Due to its foundational relevance, the section formula is a consistent topic for expected Class 10 board questions.

4. What are common traps or mistakes students make in Coordinate Geometry Class 10 important questions?

Students often make mistakes such as:

  • Mixing up the signs of coordinates when substituting into formulas
  • Incorrect application of the section or midpoint formula
  • Neglecting units in area or distance answers
  • Confusing origin placement in coordinates
  • Skipping stepwise workings, leading to calculation errors
Mastering formula direction and careful calculation helps avoid typical errors on the CBSE exam.

5. How has the type of questions from Coordinate Geometry changed in recent CBSE Class 10 maths board exams?

Recent CBSE exams have shifted towards application-based and value-based questions, often integrating Coordinate Geometry with real-life contexts or visual interpretation. There is an increasing trend of HOTS (Higher-Order Thinking Skills) and reasoning-based problems instead of just procedural computation. Students should focus on understanding concepts and practicing mixed-format problems as part of their important question revision for Class 10.

6. Can the distance formula be used for proving collinearity among three points? How is this tested in important questions?

Yes, the distance formula is often used to check if three points are collinear by comparing the sum of the lengths of two segments to the third. In board important questions, you may be asked to:

  • Calculate all three distances between points
  • Demonstrate that the sum of two distances equals the third
  • State the conclusion about collinearity with justification
This approach commonly appears in 3- or 4-mark board exam questions.

7. What is a HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) question in Class 10 Coordinate Geometry, and how should I tackle it?

A HOTS question integrates two or more coordinate geometry concepts or presents application-based reasoning. For example:

  • Finding the point dividing a segment in a given ratio, then using that point to calculate the area of a triangle
  • Linking section formula results to value-based or social scenarios
To approach HOTS questions, break down each part, apply relevant formulas, and justify your steps logically according to CBSE marking scheme.

8. What concepts should I master first to confidently answer all important questions in Class 10 Coordinate Geometry?

To confidently solve all important and expected questions, master:

  • Distance formula: Finding distance between any two points
  • Midpoint formula and special case applications
  • Section formula (internal and external division)
  • Area of triangle using coordinates
  • Understanding and plotting points on the cartesian plane
These form the foundation for all higher-level application questions in board exams.

9. Are value-based questions in Coordinate Geometry important for Class 10 boards? Give a recent example.

Yes, value-based questions are important as CBSE integrates values or situations into coordinate geometry questions. Example:

  • A school asks students to place a flag at the midpoint between two coordinates representing two friends, and you must find the coordinate and explain the value shown (e.g., friendship, teamwork).
Such questions combine mathematical application with real-world relevance in exams.

10. How much weightage does Chapter 7 (Coordinate Geometry) usually carry in the Class 10 board exam?

As per recent CBSE patterns (2025–26), Chapter 7 (Coordinate Geometry) generally carries 6–8 marks in the Class 10 maths board exam. Questions may include 1-mark MCQs, 3-mark application cases, and 4- or 5-mark HOTS problems. Check the latest CBSE syllabus for any updates to marking schemes.

11. What conceptual trap might confuse students about the midpoint and section formulas?

The main conceptual trap is mistaking when to use the midpoint formula (when the ratio is 1:1) versus the general section formula (for any ratio m:n). In important exam questions, always check:

  • If the segment is divided equally, then use the midpoint formula
  • If the ratio is given as m:n, apply the section formula
This distinction is frequently tested in CBSE board papers.

12. What type of proof or reasoning is often asked in ‘Prove that’ Coordinate Geometry questions for Class 10?

‘Prove that’ questions in this chapter typically ask students to:

  • Show that the midpoint of the hypotenuse is equidistant from all vertices (right triangle property)
  • Prove that the diagonals of a rectangle bisect each other and are equal
  • Demonstrate that three given points are collinear using calculations
Marking scheme rewards a clear stepwise logical approach with correct calculations and conclusions.
