प्रस्तुत कविता मे एक बालक के मन मे खिलौने वाले को देखकर आने वाले उत्साह के बारे मे बताया गया हैं ।

कविता के पहले भाग के माध्यम से कवयित्री बताना चाहती हैं कि जब एक बालक खिलौनेवाला देखता है तो बहुत उत्साहित हो जाता है ।
वह अपनी माँ से कहता है कि आज खिलौनेवाला तरह-तरह के खिलौने लेकर आया है । उसके पास पिंजड़े में बंद हरा-हरा तोता और एक पैसे वाली छोटी-सी मोटर गाड़ी है जो सर-सर-सर करके चलती जाती है ।
कविता के दूसरे भाग मे बालक कहता है कि आज खिलौनेवाले के पास कई तरह की सीटियाँ, चाभी से चलने वाली सुन्दर रेल और एक गुड़िया है जिसके कानों में बालियां है। उसके पास छोटा टी-सेट और छोटे छोटे लोटा थाली भी रखे हुए है |
कविता के तीसरे भाग मे बालक कहता है कि आज खिलौनेवाले के पास नए-नए खिलौने हैं। उसके पास छोटे-छोटे धनुष बाण और तलवार है | मुन्नू खिलौनेवाले से गुड़िया और मोहन मोटरगाड़ी खरीदता है | सरला अपनी माँ से साड़ी ख़रीदने के लिए कहती है | यह बालक अपनी माँ से कहता है कि साड़ियाँ तो कपड़े बेचनेवाले रखते हैं ।
कविता के इस भाग मे बालक अपनी माँ से चार पैसे ले लेता है । वह खिलौना लेने के बारे मे सोचता हुआ माँ से कहता है कि वह ये सारे खिलौने न लेकर तलवार और तीर कमान लेना चाहता है । वह जंगल जाकर भगवान राम की तरह ताड़का को मारना चाहता है ।
कविता के इस भाग मे बालक असुरों को जंगल से मार भगाना चाहता है जिससे तपस्वी साधु आसानी से यज्ञ कर सके । इस प्रकार वह रामचन्द्र और उसकी माँ को कौशल्या बनाना चाहता है ।
वह आगे कहता है कि अगर उसकी माँ उसे वन जाने का आदेश देगी तो वह खुशी-खुशी वन भी चला जाएगा । लेकिन बालक दुखी भी हो जाता है और कहता है कि वह जंगल में अकेले नहीं रह सकता । वह कहता है कि जंगल में जाने पर उसे पैसे देने वाला, मनाने वाला और गोद में बिठाकर मनचाही चीजें दिलाने वाला कोई नहीं होगा ।
