Important Topics of Digestion and Absorption for NEET

The important topics covered in the chapter Digestion and Absorption include the digestive system, digestion of food,  absorption of digested products, and the disorders of the digestive system.

Chapter - Digestion and Absorption

Digestion is the process of breaking down complex food material into a simpler form to absorb the nutrients from it. The digestive system of humans consists of the alimentary canal and various glands associated with it.

Alimentary Tract

The alimentary tract consists of several parts like the mouth, cavity, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach, intestine, rectum, and anus. Accessory digestive glands comprise the salivary glands, the liver (having gallbladder), and the pancreas.

Absorption

Carbohydrates are digested and converted into monosaccharides that are glucose and proteins and finally, it breaks into amino acids. And also fats are converted into fatty acids and glycerol, once the required things from food are absorbed by the body through the epithelial lining of the intestinal villi. The undigested food known as faeces will enter the caecum of the large intestine through the ileocecal valve.

It prevents the backflow of the faecal matter and most of the water is absorbed within the intestine. The undigested food left within the stomach becomes semi-solid and enters the rectum and anal canal. Finally, it'll get ejected out through the anus.

Absorption takes place in the different parts and the maximum absorption takes place in the small intestine. Some of them are drugs that are absorbed in the mouth. water, The function simply functions sugar, and alcohol is absorbed in the stomach, and some minerals are absorbed in the large intestine.

Disorders of the Digestive System

Many bacterial, protozoan, parasitic, and viral infections cause inflammation of the intestine and also some of the common disorders are jaundice, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion, etc.

The diseases are very common in developing and underdeveloped countries, some of the diseases are protein-energy malnutrition, marasmus, and kwashiorkor.
