Every year 26th of August is celebrated as International Dog Day. The main aim of the Happy International Dog Day celebration is to increase the count of rescue dogs. People owning a dog in-home project them as rich people in their community. And many people owning dogs for security, companionship and for many more reasons. The importance of celebrating Happy International Dog Day is to pay tribute to selfless working animals and to save their lives. On this date, many organisations are conducting surveys for a year to find the number of rescued dogs, public shelters and for maintaining the count of pure breed of rescuers.

The International Dog Day is started to celebrate from the year 2004. This day was founded by Colleen Paige, who was the Animal Rescue Advocate, Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert, Conservationist Dog Trainer, and Author. She is also the founder of various other days to protect the pets in the world. Like, National Puppy Day, National Cat Day, National Mutt Day..etc. The main objective of her is to encourage the adoption of pets among people, protecting the native original breeds..etc. She has chosen the 26th of August for celebrating International Dog Day because, on this date, her family adopted her first dog  "Sheltie" from a local animal shelter. During that adoption, Colleen Paige was at the age of 10 years.
