Management of Natural Resources is the 16th chapter in the NCERT science textbook for Class 10 students. It comes under Unit 5- Natural Resources which carries about 7 marks. This chapter covers the need to sustainably manage the natural resources on earth so that it is available for generations to come. It covers the five R’s - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle. 

It covers the need to use water judiciously and carefully as it is vital for the survival of all living beings. Furthermore, it also discusses non-renewable sources of energy such as coal and petroleum which are used on a great scale by us. In the future, these non-renewable sources will get exhausted no matter how thoughtfully we use them. Therefore, learning more about them will also help the future generations.  Towards the end of the chapter, a few suggestions are included which can be exercised to make a difference in the environment.

1. Why do we need to manage our resources?

In this topic, students learn why it is necessary to make use of natural resources judiciously. The five R’s are:

The various stakeholders when we consider the conservation of forests are:

  •  The people who live in or around forests and rely on forest produce for different aspects of their lives.

  • The wildlife and nature enthusiasts who want to conserve nature in its untouched form.

3. What was the Chipko Andolan?

The Chipko Andolan (hug the trees movement) originated in a distant village called Reni in Garhwal, in the Himalayan region during the early 1970s. It was the result of a conflict between local villagers and a logging contractor who had been allowed to cut trees in a forest near the village. One day the contractor’s workers came to the forest to cut the trees while the men were absent. The women of the forest quickly reached there and bravely hugged the trees to prevent them from cutting. Thus, the contractor had to withdraw. The Chipko movement became an inspiration for many other movements around the world.
