3. What was the Chipko Andolan?
The Chipko Andolan (hug the trees movement) originated in a distant village called Reni in Garhwal, in the Himalayan region during the early 1970s. It was the result of a conflict between local villagers and a logging contractor who had been allowed to cut trees in a forest near the village. One day the contractor’s workers came to the forest to cut the trees while the men were absent. The women of the forest quickly reached there and bravely hugged the trees to prevent them from cutting. Thus, the contractor had to withdraw. The Chipko movement became an inspiration for many other movements around the world.
