‘Bhaktin’ is the name of Chapter 10 of the Hindi Aroh of Class 12 of the CBSE Board. The title of the chapter is inspired by the name given to her helper by the author Mahadevi Verma, at her request. Bhaktin introduces herself as Lakshmi, but persists for some reason to not address her by the name. She asks instead to give her name when Mahadevi decides to call her Bhaktin. In the chapter the life story of Bhaktin, now an old woman is depicted in four parts.

The first part includes her life from birth till her marriage by the age of 5 and shifting to her in-laws by the age of 9. During this time there is the untimely demise of her father of which she is not informed because the mother-in-law didn't want to create an atmosphere of mourning in her house.

The second stage includes the birth of her daughters for which she is ill-treated by her in-laws. Her daughters are made to do all the household chores even when young while the boys of her elder sisters-in-law are given the royal treatment. Somehow, Bhaktin manages to leave the house with her loving husband and start a new life.

The third part of her life also faces grief as, her eldest married daughter becomes a widow and by the plottings of Bhaktin’s in-laws, her daughter is married off to another man who does not treat her well. After the untimely death of her husband, Bhaktin’s property is also snatched away by her in-laws. Following the start of the fourth stage of her life, Bhaktin determined to become independent and earn her life she started working as a maid with Mahadevi Verma. She becomes an integral part of the author’s life and at times helps her as well apart from regular work. Thus, the story is a form of inspirational work from a character that may seem as common as possible.
