Summary of the Story:

Once upon a time, there was a king who had the habit of spending his money in lavish ways. But when it came to helping his subjects financially, he always stepped back. Not only did he not help his subjects in any way, but also insulted them in the worst way possible.

Once, a famine had started in his kingdom. The subjects of his kingdom came to him and asked for help. They requested the king to give them some money from the kingdom treasury to buy food and grains. The king, on hearing their request, refused. He said that helping them financially is not possible because today there is a famine, tomorrow, there will be an earthquake, the next day it will be some poor family from a poor kingdom, who will come to ask for help. If the king goes on helping everyone, then in no time will his treasury be empty and he will be bankrupt. Listening to this, his subjects became sad and went away.

The famine went on increasing. Every day, many people die of hunger. Again, his subjects came to him and asked for some help. They begged to give him at least ten thousand rupees to buy food. Hearing this, the king smirked, saying ten thousand is also not a small amount.

His subjects requested him a lot. Yet, he refused. When they asked him to give them some amount of money from the whole lot that he spends, he became furious and asked them to leave, otherwise, they would face consequences.

When his subjects left, the king laughed at them. Although he laughed, his courtiers were unsatisfied with him, and everyone was of the opinion that the king could have given some amount of money to them.

A few days later, an ascetic came over to his palace. He praised the king a lot and begged for some money. The king, happy on listening to his praises, agreed to give him money, only if it’s a small amount. The ascetic said that he has a way of taking his donations. He takes double the amount of what he took the previous day. The king agreed but asked him the amount he wanted to take on the first day. The ascetic said that he is not a greedy person, so he’d take only one rupee the first day. The king agreed and asked his treasurer to provide the ascetic with his donation, every day, for twenty days.

Days passed, the treasurer went on giving the donations to the ascetic. On the fourteenth day, he realised that he had to give a lot of money to the ascetic. He immediately informed the chief minister about this. The Chief Minister, upon hearing, agreed that this is a huge amount. But the king had given his orders, so it cannot be changed now, he said.

Again after a few days, the treasurer came running to the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister, on seeing the calculation, wiped his sweat and asked the treasurer to make the total calculation of how much money the ascetic is supposed to receive at the end of twenty days. The entire amount summed up to more than one lakh!

When the king understood his mistake, he requested the ascetic to come to a middle ground, by a discussion. The ascetic replied that he would need fifty thousand rupees for the people afflicted with the famine.

The king had to give away the money to the ascetic.
