Short Summary of Class 4 Chapter 3- A Day With Nandu

This chapter is about an elephant named Nandu. It begins with Nandu starting his day by looking around, surrounded by big forest and great tree trunks. The great forest that he imagined was his family members. It was a sunny day, and Nandu's maternal grandmother was the oldest in the herd. She had started walking towards the forest and the other elephants had joined her, along with Nandu. On reaching the forest, the herd spread out and began eating.

After eating, the elephants started drinking water from the river. The little elephants enjoyed playing inside the water. Nandu then finds his brothers and sisters pulling each other's tails. Fearing that they might fall on him, he joins his mother. However, his mother pushed him towards the river and urged him to play with others. But, just as he reached near the water, a strong fountain of water fell on his head, and he got completely drenched. But this was just his cousins. Nandu joined them and started playing. However, before sunset, the herd started on their journey back towards the jungle. Nandu was very tired and therefore, he occupied a place between his mother's legs and fell asleep as he drank her milk.

Just like elephants, many other animals live in groups in the jungle. Such groups are called herds. Animals who live in herds move around together, searching for their food. The chapter also covers many interesting facts such as the fact that elephants can consume more than 100 kilograms of leaves as well as twigs in just a single day, and these elephants sleep for only two to four hours a day. Moreover, elephants use their big ears like fans. They flap them to keep themselves cool.
