Summary of the World in my Home

• This chapter presents the modern-day social problems which we face.

• Problems of male domination, gender discrimination, exploitation, caste system, the dominance of earning members of the family, and female harassment.

Tug of War

• Marietta’s family were watching television together in the evening.

• Everyone in the family has different program choices;some want to watch the cricket match, some cartoons, and some series.

• But everyone had to watch the football match as Marietta’s dad wanted to watch it.

• This is an example of male or head dominance in a family where the head male does things according to himself and others in the family had to adjust accordingly.

• This social issue exists in every family.

• A male head of any family should be a representative of his family.

• Every person in the family should be given equal treatment.

Why the difference?

• Pratibha was rushing towards her home after playing, as it was 7’o clock in the evening.

• Her brothers Sandeep and Sanjay were still playing on the ground they were not in a hurry to go back home.

• Pratibha’s time was fixed if she would not enter by 7 her parents would scold her for being late.

• Whereas, no one said anything to her brothers even if they are late and entered at any time at home.

• This is an example of gender discrimination in a family, where a girl child has her limits whereas boys don’t have any limits.

• These limits are set by the families and society.

• We should not differentiate between a girl and a boy.

• A girl coming home late doesn’t mean she did any mistake; she can have work late too. 

Pilloo Aunty

• One day, Pilloo aunty took Phali, Nazu, and their friends to the beach.

• They enjoyed a lot, played in sand and water, had a ride on the giant wheel, ate bhelpuri, and bought balloons too.

• Then they went to eat Kulfi from a kulfiwala, they were a total of seven and everyone took one each.

• At the time of payment kulfiwala took the payment of 5 kulfis by mistake.

• Everyone was happy that they had to pay less, but Pilloo aunty corrected him and paid for the seven kulfi.

• This is an example of having good social values in life, Pilloo aunty saw that the kulfiwala was getting exploited by mistake and she paid the actual amount.

What should I do?

• Akshay’s Grandmother warned her that he should not even drink a glass of water from Anil’s house. 

• Anil was a good friend of Akshay.

• One day a situation occurred where Akshay was offered a glass of water when he was quite thirsty by Anil.

• Akshay’s grandmother said not to have anything from Anil’s house because they were from a different caste.

• This is an example of caste discrimination which exists in society since ancient times.

• The upper caste people think of themselves as superior to the lower ones.

• This creates differences in society.

• Every person is equal and should not be discriminated against their caste.

Who will decide?

• Dhonu is from a joint family, where his elder uncle looks after the family as he does all the work in the field and looks into the money matter.

• Dhonu had an investment idea on which his father agreed but his elder uncle didn’t allow him.

• This is an example that if power is in the single hand things go out of the hand.

• The dominance of one person in a big family, creates issues in the family if the person doesn’t understand others properly.

I don’t like it

• Meena was inviting her friend Ritu to her home to play together after school.

• Ritu was refusing that if Meena’s uncle is at the home, she won’t be coming to play.

• Meena said that her uncle liked her very much and always asks Meena to bring her friend home along.

• Ritu said clearly that she didn’t like the way her uncle touches her, she feels quite uncomfortable.

• This is an example showing harassment to a girl child, it’s a common phenomenon, and a lot of girls go through this type of comfortless.

• Every touch is not uncomfortable till it is done with bad intentions.
