Hint: The communication that occurs in our day to day lives is of the signal form. But when these signals waves are in the form of highs and lows (or 0s and 1s) then those signals are called digital signals. Analog signals have several issues that we can feel for ourselves, digital communication helps overcome these issues.
Complete answer:
As you know earlier analog waves were used for communication of all sorts (even long distance). The waves of analog signals are of the form of sinusoidal waves which have the risk of being subjected to losses like distortion, interference and other losses that makes communication quality poor which is not desirable. Now these signals are digitized before being received by the receiver using a digital modulator. These digital signals have several advantages over the usual analog signals. Some of them are:
1. The effect of distortion, noise and interference is much less in digital communication.
2. They are easier to design and cheaper than analog circuits.
3. The hardware implementation is easier in case of digital circuits than the earlier used analog circuits.
4. The signal stays unaltered all throughout the channel because digital signals need high disturbance to alter its properties unlike the analog signals which can be easily disturbed.
5. The digital signals can be saved and retrieved later easily while they are a far too stretched process in case of analog signals.
6. These are some of the widely popular and acceptable reasons why digital communication is taking over analog communication.
Note:
However, using digital communication demands the need for conversion from analog to data thus the transmission bandwidth needed might be a bit more than usual which is also undesirable. But if this minor issue is not taken into consideration then digital communication is better than analog.
