1. Today Sugandha is very excited. All the children of her school are going on a trip to Bhopal with their teachers. Ms. Meenakshi and Mr. Rakesh are talking about the number of buses needed. Ms. Meenakshi — We will need 4 buses. Mr. Rakesh — I think we need at least 5. Ms. Meenakshi — Each bus has 50 seats. Mr. Rakesh — Let us see how many children are going.

I. So there are a total of __________ children going. 

Ans: When asked to find the total number, we add all the given data. 

The number of children in class I is 33.

The number of children in class II is 32.

The number of children in class III is 42.

The number of children in class IV is 50.

The number of children in class V is 53.

So, the total number of student will be

$33 + 32 + 42 + 50 + 53$

By adding all numbers,

$33 + 32 + 42 + 50 + 53 = 210$

Thus, there are a total of 210 children going.


II. If they get 4 buses, how many children will get seats? _________ 

Ans: Each of the bus has 50 seats.

The number of seats in 4 buses will be$\left( {50 \times 4} \right)$.

 By multiplying 4 with 50, $\left( {50 \times 4} \right) = 200$

Thus, if they get 4 buses, 200 children will get seats.


III. Will there be any children left without seats?

Ans: Total number of children is 210.

The 4 buses have total of 200 seats.

So, there will be some children who will not get any seats.

So, the number of remaining children are $\left( {210 - 200} \right)$

By subtracting,           $\left( {210 - 200} \right) = 10$

Hence, there will be 10 children left without seats.


2. Each mini bus can take 35 students. How many mini buses are needed?

Ans: Total number of students is 210.

Number of students can get sets in each mini bus is 35.

Thus, the number of minibus required: $\left( {\frac{{210}}{{35}}} \right)$

  By dividing,

$\frac{{210}}{{35}} = 6$

Hence, total 6 mini buses are needed.

i. As the bus starts moving, children sing at the tip of their voices. Some look outsides to enjoy the view of the green fields and the hills.

Indra- When will we reach Bhopal?

Ms. Asha- If we don’t stop anywhere, we should reach there in 2 hours, that is around_____________ o’clock.

Ans: It was 9 o’clock when they started their journey.

If they can reach Bhopal in 2 hours, then the time will be 2 hours later from 9’oclock.

Thus, they will reach Bhopal at $\left( {9 + 2} \right) = 11$o’clock.


ii. If they go Bhimbetka, they will reach there

  • Before 10’oclock
  • Between 10 o’clock and 11 o’clock
  • After 11 o’clock.

Ans: As Bhimbetka is the nearest place, so they can reach there within 1 hour.

Thus, they will reach Bhimbetka before $\left( {9 + 1} \right) = 10$o’clock.


iii. Have you ever crossed a long bridge? About how many meters long was it?

Ans: Yes, once I have crossed an 800metres long bridge.


iv. What is the difference between the water level of Narmada in the rainy season and now?

Ans: In general, the water level of Narmada is 40metres below the bridge.

During the rainy season, the level of the water increases which is 15metres below the bridge. 

So, the difference between the levels of water is$\left( {40 - 15} \right)m = 25m$.

Hence, the difference between the water level of Narmada in the rainy season and now is 25 meters.


3. Each bus takes about 15 minutes to refill and there are two buses to be refilled. So they stop there for about __________ minutes, which means they are late by about _________ minutes.

Ans: Each bus takes 15minutes to fill 

There are two buses which have been filled.

So, they have to stop for$\left( {15 \times 2} \right) = 30$minutes. 

That means they are late by about 30 minutes.

i. Look in the picture and find the price of 1 litre of diesel.___________________

Ans: From the picture,

The cost of 100 litres of diesel is 3500 rupees.

So, the cost of 1 litre diesel is $\left( {\frac{{3500}}{{100}}} \right)rupees = 35rupees$

Hence, the price of 1litre of diesel is 35 rupees.


5. How much time did Aman take to come out of the toilet? __________________

Ans: From the previous question, we know that one bus takes 15 minutes to refill

Aman took time to come out of the toilet as much as the bus takes to refill.

Hence, Aman took 15minutes to come out of the toilet.

i. How many more deer are there than bison? ________

Ans: From the above picture, they have counted 37 bison and 117 deers.

So, there are more deer than bison.

We can find the difference between them by subtracting, which denotes the number of deers more than the bison.

So, the number of deer more than the bisons is$\left( {117 - 37} \right) = 80$.

Hence, there are 80 more deer than bison.


7. But Bonomala is the happiest because the number of people is even more than the number of deer and bison together. Her count is less than 200. How many people must Bonomala have counted? 214 / 154 / 134 / 177

Ans: The number of deers is 117 and bison is 37.

By adding we can find the total number of deers and bison.

Then the total number of deer and bisons is $\left( {117 + 37} \right) = 154$.

The total number of people is more than total the number of deers and bison.

The total number of deer and bison is 154.

This means the total number of people is more than 154.

Bonomala’s count is less than 200.

So, the total number of people is less than 200.

Thus, the total number of people will be 177.

Hence, Bonomala must have counted 177 people.


8. They have spent 1 hour there.

What time is it? _________ They are now moving towards Bhopal. They should reach there in less than 1 hour, at about _________ o’ clock.

Ans: Their right time to reach Bhimbetka was at 10 am but they got 30minutes late.

This means they have reached Bhimbetka at $\left( {10{\text{AM}} + 30{\text{minutes}}} \right) = 10:30{\text{AM}}$.

They have spent 1 hour there.

So, the time is $\left( {10:30{\text{AM}} + 1{\text{hour}}} \right) = 11:30{\text{AM}}$

Hence, they are moving towards Bhopal at 11:30 AM. 

They should reach there in less than 1 hour.

Thus, they have to reach Bhopal before$\left( {11:30{\text{AM}} + 1{\text{hour}}} \right) = 12:30{\text{PM}}$.

Hence, they should reach there in less than 1 hour, at about 12:30 PM.


9. Each child is to be given 1 orange, 1 banana and 5 biscuits. All the children take oranges and biscuits but 38 children do not take bananas. How many oranges, biscuits and bananas are distributed?

Ans: Total number of students is 210.

Each of the children gets 1 orange, 1 banana and 5 biscuits.

By multiplying the total number of students with number of oranges, bananas and biscuits, we can find the total number of oranges, bananas and biscuits respectively.

So, the number of oranges distributed is $\left( {210 \times 1} \right) = 210$oranges.

Number of biscuits distributed is $\left( {210 \times 5} \right) = 1050$ biscuits.

Number of bananas needs to be distributed is bananas$\left( {210 \times 1} \right) = 210$. 

But, 38 children refuse to take bananas.

So, 38 bananas were not distributed.

Thus, the number of bananas distributed is $\left( {210 - 38} \right) = 172$bananas.

Hence, 210 oranges, 172 bananas and 1050 biscuits were distributed among the children.


10. I gave four toffees each to four of my friends and three toffees are left with me. How many toffees did I have?

Ans: Total friends is 4.

I gave 4 toffees to each of my friends.

 So, total number of toffees is$\left( {4 \times 4} \right) = 16$toffees. 

After distribution, 3 toffees are left.

Thus, the total number of toffees is $\left( {16 + 3} \right) = 19$ toffees.

Hence, I had 19 toffees.


11. What numbers can you make using 3, 5 and 7? You can make 357 and 537. What others?

Ans: By using 3, 5 and 7 we can make 357 and 537.

By swapping the digits 3, 5, and 7, we also can make 753,735,375,573.

Hence, the other numbers are 753,735,375 and 573.


12. A number becomes double if it is increased by 8. What is the number?

Ans: Let the number be $x$.

The number becomes double if it is increased by 8.

So, we can write

$x + 8 = 2x$

Subtracting 8 from both sides,

$x = 2x - 8$

Let us randomly put the values of $x$ to satisfy the equation.

When $x = 1$, 

Then $1 = 2 - 8$

Both sides are not same.

Hence, $x = 1$ is not satisfying the equation.

When $x = 3$,

Then $3 = 2 \times 3 - 8$

$3 = 6 - 8$

Both sides are not same.

Hence, $x = 3$ is not satisfying the equation.

When $x = 8$,

Then $8 = 2 \times 8 - 8$

$8 = 16 - 8$

Both sides are same.

Thus, $x = 8$ is satisfying the equation.

Hence, the required number is 8.


13. Think of a number which can be divided by 2, 3 and 5 and comes between 25 and 50.

Ans: The numbers that come between 25 and 50 and can be divided by 2 are:

\[26,{\text{ }}28,{\text{ }}30,{\text{ }}32,{\text{ }}34,{\text{ }}36,{\text{ }}38,{\text{ }}40,{\text{ }}42,{\text{ }}46,{\text{ }}48.\]

Similarly, the numbers that come between 25 and 50 and can be divided by 3 are:

\[27,{\text{ }}30,{\text{ }}33,{\text{ }}36,{\text{ }}39,{\text{ }}42,{\text{ }}45,{\text{ }}48\]

Similarly, the numbers that come between 25 and 50 and can be divided by 5 are:

\[30,{\text{ }}35,{\text{ }}40,{\text{ }}45\]

Thus, 30 is the only common number that lies between 25 and 50 and can be divided by 2, 3and 5.


14. A small ant climbs 3 cm in 1 minute but slips down 2 cm. How much time will it take to climb to 2 cm? 

Ans: An ant takes 1 minute to climb 3cm but slips down 2cm. 

By subtracting the slip-down distance from the climbing distance, we can find the exact climbing distance in 1 minute.

This means the ant climbs only $\left( {3 - 2} \right) = 1$ cm in 1 minute.

Then the ant climbs 2 cm in$\left( {2 \times 1} \right) = 2$minutes.

 Thus, the ant will take 2 minutes to climb to 2cm.


15. There are different kinds of boats. Each has a different ticket price, and also different trip times.

i. Indra and Bhanu first went in the motor-boat, and then took the oar-boat. How much did they pay for both the boats? Rs _____________ How much time did they get for both rides? ______________

Ans: According to the above table, the price for the motor-boat per head is Rs 25

So, the total amount Indra and Bhanu paid for the motor boat is $Rs\left( {25 \times 2} \right) = Rs50$.

The ticket-price for the oar-boat per head is Rs 15. 

So, the total amount Indra and Bhanu paid for the oar- boat is $Rs\left( {15 \times 2} \right) = Rs30$

Therefore, Indra and Bhanu paid for both the boats is $Rs\left( {50 + 30} \right) = Rs80$.

Trip-time for motor-boat is 20 minutes

Trip-time for oar-boat is 45 minutes.

Total trip-time for both motor-boat and oar-boat is $\left( {20 + 45} \right){\text{min}} = 65{\text{min}}$

$65{\text{min}} = 1{\text{hr 5min}}$

So, they got both the rides for 1 hour and 5 minutes.


ii. One group of children went for the double-decker trip. They paid Rs 450 in total. How many children went for the double-decker trip? ____________

Ans: The ticket price for a double-decker boat is Rs 30 per head. 

One group of children went for the double-decker trip and they spent Rs 450.

So, the total number of students of that group is $\left( {\frac{{450}}{{30}}} \right) = 15$

Thus, 15 children spent on the double-decker trip.


iii. Which boat makes two trips in 1 hour?

Ans: The trip time of Paddle-boat is 30minutes.

So, a Paddle-boat completes 1 trip in 30 minutes.

Thus, Paddle-boat completes 2 trips in \[\left( {30 \times 2} \right){\text{min}} = 60{\text{min}}\]

We have, $1{\text{hour}} = 60{\text{minutes}}$

Thus, Paddle-boats makes 2 trips in 1 hours.


iv. Which boat takes less than half an hour to complete a trip?

Ans: The trip time for a motorboat is 20 minutes.

So, a motor-boat completes 1 trip in less than 30 minutes i.e. half an hour.

Thus, motor-boat takes less than half an hour to complete a trip.


v. Which boat gives them the most time taking the least money?

Ans: The boat with oars gives the most time taking that is 45minutes and takes the least money, Rs 15.


vi. Javed went twice for boating. He paid a total of Rs 40. and boating for 50 minutes. Which two boats did he take? _____________

Ans: Javed went two times for boating.

He paid Rs 40 and spent 50 minutes.

So, he must have paid for Paddle boat and Motor-boat because of:

The total price for Paddle-boat and Motor-boat is $Rs\left( {15 + 25} \right) = Rs40$

The total trip-time for Paddle-boat and Motor-boat is $\left( {30 + 20} \right){\text{minutes}} = 50{\text{minutes}}$.

Hence, he took Paddle-boat and Motor-boat.


16. Children enjoy different boat rides till 4 o’clock. It is time to return. Now they will not stop anywhere and reach back in two hours. So, they should reach Hoshangabad by __________o’clock. 

Ans: Children have started the boat ride by 4 o’clock.

They have to back to Hoshangabad in 2 hours.
