(iii) Collinear but not equal

Ans: Vectors $\overline {\text{a}} $ and $\overline {\text{c}} $ are collinear but not equal. This is because although they are parallel, their directions are not the same

5. Answer the following as true or false:

(i) a and - a are collinear.

Ans: True.

Vectors a and - a can be parallel or coinciding vectors. Either way the vectors will have same magnitude but opposite in direction and will be parallel to the same line.

(ii) Two collinear vectors are always equal in magnitude.

Ans: False.

Collinear vectors are those vectors that are parallel to the same line.

(iii) Two vectors having same magnitude are collinear.

Ans: False.

It is not necessary for two vectors having the same magnitude to be parallel to the same line.

(iv) Two collinear vectors having the same magnitude are equal.

Ans: False.

Two vectors are said to be equal if they have the same magnitude and direction, regardless of the positions of their initial points.

FAQs on NCERT Solutions For Class 12 Maths Chapter 10 Vector Algebra Exercise 10.1 - 2025-26

1. How do NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Maths Chapter 10 help students understand vector algebra concepts as per CBSE 2025–26 syllabus?

NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Maths Chapter 10 present stepwise methods following the latest CBSE 2025–26 guidelines, enabling students to grasp concepts like magnitude, direction, and vector types. Clear explanations and worked-out examples enhance conceptual clarity and problem-solving accuracy, essential for board exams.

2. What is the recommended step-by-step approach to solve vector problems in Exercise 10.1 of Class 12 Maths?

The recommended approach is:

  • Understand the problem and extract given data.
  • Recall the relevant formula for vector operations or definitions.
  • Represent vectors graphically if required.
  • Show all calculation steps for magnitude and direction.
  • Double-check the answer with the solution steps for accuracy.

3. Why is distinguishing between scalar and vector quantities important in vector algebra questions for CBSE board exams?

Distinguishing between scalars (possessing only magnitude) and vectors (having both magnitude and direction) is essential, as correct identification determines the application of vector operations. Board exam questions frequently test this conceptual clarity in both theoretical and application-based formats.

4. What errors should students avoid when applying vector addition and collinearity rules in Class 12 vector algebra problems?

Common errors to avoid include:

  • Mixing up direction when adding or subtracting vectors
  • Assuming all vectors with equal magnitude are collinear
  • Ignoring the significance of initial point alignment for co-initial vectors
  • Misapplying arrow notations or graphical representations

These mistakes can lead to incorrect answers in both short and long answer questions.

5. How does practicing with NCERT Solutions for Exercise 10.1 improve performance in application-based questions asked in CBSE or JEE/NEET exams?

Practicing with NCERT Solutions for Exercise 10.1 builds a strong foundation by providing detailed, stepwise solutions for each vector concept. This clarity supports solving application-based questions, especially those involving operations like vector addition, scalar multiplication, and determining collinearity—key areas for both CBSE and competitive exams.

6. What are the main types of vectors discussed in Chapter 10, and how are they commonly tested in board exams?

The main types of vectors are:

  • Zero vector – Magnitude zero, no specific direction
  • Unit vector – Magnitude one, shows direction only
  • Collinear vectors – Lie along the same line or parallel lines

Board exams often ask students to define, identify, or differentiate these using diagrams or conceptual MCQs.

7. In what ways do direction and magnitude influence the result of vector operations in Exercise 10.1?

Direction and magnitude together determine the unique outcome of operations like vector addition or subtraction. Changing either alters the final vector, so attention to both is crucial for correct solutions as per CBSE question patterns.

8. What strategies help students master the graphical representation of vectors for board and entrance exams?

Effective strategies include:

  • Practicing diagram drawing for different vector scenarios (e.g., co-initial, equal, collinear)
  • Using arrow notations accurately to denote magnitude and direction
  • Labelling vectors clearly
  • Cross-verifying with textbook examples for standard representations

Graphical accuracy is often rewarded in board answers for clarity and marks.

9. How do NCERT Solutions ensure alignment with the CBSE marking scheme and prepare students for full marks in vector algebra questions?

NCERT Solutions adhere strictly to CBSE's step-marking and answer structure, including clear steps, formulae usage, and diagrammatic explanations. Following these guidelines helps students present answers in the expected format, maximizing their chances to score full marks in vector algebra questions.

10. What higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) should students develop when approaching challenging vector algebra problems in Chapter 10?

Students should cultivate:

  • Critical analysis of vector relationships and properties
  • Problem decomposition to isolate key steps (e.g., resolving vectors into components)
  • Connecting vector concepts with physical contexts (such as in Physics)
  • Formulating proofs or logical arguments for vector properties

These HOTS are essential for excelling in both standard and advanced board/competitive exam questions.
