Reading Passage: The Forgotten Kite

Leo ambled through the park on a breezy afternoon, the sun warming his shoulders. His eyes scanned the familiar landscape of green grass and tall, rustling trees. A wave of sadness washed over Leo. He imagined the kite had once soared high in the sky, a beacon of joy for a child. Now, it was forgotten and trapped. "I have to get it down," he murmured with a sense of purpose. He was determined to free it. His first attempt involved trying to climb the tree, but the lowest branches were just out of his reach. Next, he tried tossing a fallen stick at the tangled tail, but his aim was off, and the stick clattered uselessly to the ground.

Feeling a little discouraged, he sat on a bench to think. Just then, a girl with bright, curious eyes approached him. "Trying to get the kite?" she asked, pointing upwards. Leo nodded. "I'm Maya. Maya's plan was ingenious. Leo, being taller, took the weighted twine and, after a few practice throws, managed to loop it over the branch that held the kite captive. Together, they grabbed both ends of the twine and began to gently shake the branch. Back and forth, back and forth they pulled in a steady rhythm. The branch swayed, and slowly, the tangled ribbon began to loosen. With one final, coordinated tug, the kite broke free and drifted gently down towards them.

Leo caught it triumphantly. Up close, it was even more worn than he had thought, but its wooden frame was still strong. A small tear in the fabric could be easily fixed. "It's beautiful," Maya said, her eyes shining. Leo agreed. It wasn't a forgotten toy anymore. "We rescued it," Leo said. "Now, let's make it fly again." With a shared grin, they ran towards the open field, the rescued kite held between them, ready for a new adventure.
