  • He always played with the children, teaching them to fly kites, shoot marbles, and tell them stories.

  • Rip Van Winkle was, however, lazy and ignored his farmland and did no work.

  • The fence around his farm was falling and weeds were growing on the land, but he could not care any less.

  • One day along with Wolf, he went on a walk over the mountain, the climb was long and they reached the top.

  • He realised they could not start their journey back to the village since it would get dark soon.

  • He heard his name being called and wondered who it was, and then saw an old short man who had thick hair with a long beard who asked for his help in carrying the barrels.

  • They reached a place where more men looked like the old short men and were playing a game where only the thrashing of the ball made the noise.

  • They offered him a drink and he obliged and drank it only to find himself waking up from a night of sleep at the place where he first met the old man.

  • He walked back to the village but they were all staring at him oddly, he could not understand why.

  • Villagers also wondered who he was, and pointed at his long white beard and wrinkles.

  • Rip Van Winkle saw his beard was white and grown a lot and realised a lot of time has passed and so much has changed when his old neighbour came closer and recognised him.

  • He was welcomed back to the village once everyone recognised him.
