Hint: An Electric bell is a device which works on the mechanism of electromagnetism. Whenever the current is passed through the coil then the circuit gets completed which makes triggering of the hammer on the metal plate. Thus, when this circuit gets completed it triggers a sound which can be heard by our naked ears.
Complete answer:
An electric bell is a mechanical device which works on the principle of electromagnet. Electromagnet is a type of magnet in which whenever the current flows it produces a magnetic field. When this current stops flowing it does not produce any such magnetic fields.
Working: Any power source can be used to produce magnetic current in the electromagnet. When we press the switch of an electric bell it acts as a circuit breaker. The arm which strikes the sonorous material inside the bell is connected to a spring at one end and an iron ball at the other end. When the magnetic field produced by the electromagnetic attracts the metal strip then the circuit gets complete and then we hear the sound. The circuit diagram of Electric bell is shown below:
Applications: They can be used in railway crossings, in schools, in offices and even at our homes. Water tanks are also fitted with this electric bell. There are many applications for electric bells.
Note: Electromagnets play a major role in electric bells. The electromagnets are used to make and break the circuit in the electric bell. Whenever the current is passed through electromagnetically it generates magnetic fields. Electromagnets are known as temporary magnets as they do not have permanent magnetic properties.
