Ladakh is the area administered by India as a union territory. It is surrounded by the Tibet autonomous region to the east, the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to the South, Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan administered Gilgit-Baltistan to the west, and the southwest area of Xinjiang across the Karakoram pass in the far north.
In the summer season the people of the Ladakh desert largely lean on agriculture for their livelihood. They grow crops such as barley, wheat, peas, turnip, buckwheat, beans and rapeseed. Apples and apricots are grown in warmer areas of low altitudes.
In the winter season, the climate is very harsh so the people mostly keep themselves busy in festivities and ceremonies. Another main activities of Ladakh people were to manage and entertain tourists from India and the rest of the world.
The people of Ladakh also run small businesses and shops. They traditionally lead a nomadic pastoral life hence the sheep rearing is also one of the main occupations. The herdsmen are called Chang-pas and they breed long-haired goats and sheeps from whose under fleece the famous Kasmiri shawls are obtained.

Note: Ladakh region also provides the thrill of trekking and adventure to skillful mountain climbers with treks such as Chadar Trek and the Stok Kangri Trek. This region also provides the hunters exotic hunts of the markhor, red bear, snow leopard, wild sheep, antelope, gazelle, and marmot. Mining of minerals such as gold, copper and some precious stones is also done in some parts of Ladakh.
