Hint:
This power station was previously named as the Krishna Rajendra hydro-electric project after the King of Mysuru at that time. The name was later changed to Mahatma Gandhi hydro-electric project.

Complete Step by Step Answer:
The Mahatma Gandhi hydro-electric project has been operational since 1948 and is of 120 MegaWatt capacity, one of the largest hydroelectric stations in India of that time and a small source of electric power for the state of Karnataka now. The hydro-electric project was conceived by the government of Mysore in the mid-1943. A scheme to generate 64,000 horsepower of electricity at the cost of rupees 358 lakhs was designed. The capacity was increased substantially and now produces nearly 7 MegaWatt of electricity. This hydro-electric project was served by the Hirebhaskara Dam until 1960. After 1960, by the idea of renowned Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya, Linganmakki Dam has been used for power generation.

Hence, the correct option is D.

Note:
The Mahatma Gandhi hydro-electric project is associated with the famous “Jog Falls” that is created by the Shravasti Riverdropping 253 m or 830 feet making it the third highest waterfall in India and the second largest plunge waterfall in India. The location of this Jog Falls is in the Western Ghat, Sagara Taluk, Shimoga District.
The Shravasti River rises in the Western Ghats and it flows 60 miles in the north-westerly direction to the Arabian Sea at Honavar. After about 8 miles from its mouth, the Shravasti River attains a breadth of 70 metres or 230 feet.
