Hint: M.A. of a pulley system means mechanical advantage of a pulley system. A pulley is a simple machine where a wheel is fixed on a shaft or an axle which could support the movement and change of direction. A group of pulleys connected by ropes is known as a pulley system and mechanical advantage of a pulley system is directly proportional to the number of movable pulleys in that system. We can solve problems using this relation for any given pulley system.
Formula used: \[M.A=2\times n\]
Complete answer:
As we could see in our daily life, using more than one pulley always reduces the effort of work. That is an example by which we can understand that instead of a single pulley, a pulley system has more mechanical advantage.
Using a system of pulleys will be more complex, but it will greatly reduce the amount of energy required to move an object. The mechanical advantage of a pulley system is calculated using the formula,
\[M.A=2\times n\]
In which, \[M.A\] =mechanical advantage
\[n\]= number of movable pulleys.
As we can understand from the formula, M.A. is directly proportional to the number of pulleys. So, more number of pulleys, more will be the mechanical advantage.
Also, the mechanical advantage of the pulley system is equal to the number of ropes that support the moveable pulley, less any friction. As more number of pulleys are there, the friction of the rope sliding over it reduces.
When we look at examples of calculating M.A. of a pulley system,
In this no of movable pulleys is 2. Then,
\[M.A=2\times 2=4\]
Here, no of movable pulleys is 1.
\[M.A=2\times 1=2\]
We could find mechanical advantages of any pulley system with any number of pulleys using this formula.
So, that is a small briefing about mechanical advantages of a pulley system.
Note:
We can observe a lot of examples for pulley systems in our daily life. Most common and unnoticed one is tying your shoelaces. In that, if no of holes is more or in other words, the number of zigzag patterns is more, the shoe tightens around your foot with great force and holds it with a simple knot.
