The tides that take place on earth are majorly influenced by the moon but considerable tidal forces are generated by the sun. Due to the mutual attraction of earth and the moon, the lunar tides occur and due to the mutual attraction of sun and earth, the solar tides occur.
The gravity of the moon pulls upwards on earth’s water which causes a rise in the direction of the moon whereas when the force of the moon is low, on the other side of the earth, high tide occurs. The areas directly in the line of the moon experience high tides when the earth rotates on its axis.
Tides are also caused by the gravitational pull of the sun. The spring tide occurs on the new moon or full moon when the sun and the moon are in line. High tides are really high and low tides are really low on the spring tide. When the moon is perpendicular to the earth, the earth and sun are in line, a neap tide occurs.

Note: On each tidal day, two high tides and two tides occur. Due to the rotation of the earth on its axis, the high tide and low tide cycle move around the globe in a 24 hour period.
