Pre RMO Exam 2026 Highlights for Students

The Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics, or IOQM, has replaced the earlier Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad. It is the first and mandatory stage for students seeking to qualify for the Regional Mathematical Olympiad and advance in the Mathematics Olympiad selection process.

The Pre RMO Exam 2026 or IOQM is a prestigious national-level Mathematics competition that helps identify and encourage talented young students with strong mathematical thinking. It is conducted as part of the selection pathway managed by HBCSE and the Mathematics Teachers’ Association of India for choosing students for the International Mathematical Olympiad.

For students aiming to represent India at the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad, the Pre RMO, or IOQM, is the first important step on that journey.

Pre RMO Mathematics Olympiad (IOQM 2026) Eligibility Criteria

Students who want to appear for IOQM 2026 must meet the official eligibility criteria for age, class, nationality, residence, and academic status. Students should check these conditions carefully before applying, as failing to meet any of the conditions may result in disqualification at any stage.

Who Can Apply for IOQM 2026?

  • Students born between August 1, 2006 and July 31, 2013, are eligible to appear for IOQM 2026.

  • Students must be studying in Class 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12.

  • Students born on or after August 1, 2013, will not be allowed to appear for IOQM 2026.

  • Nationality and Passport Requirement

  • Students must be eligible to hold an Indian passport.

  • Students with OCI cards may be allowed to appear for IOQM 2026 on a provisional basis. Still, they are not eligible for selection in the Indian team for IMO, EGMO, or APMO under the current court-related rules.

OCI Students Eligibility

  • OCI students can participate in the earlier stages of the Olympiad programme if they meet all other conditions.

  • They may be eligible up to stages such as IMOTC and EGMOTC on a provisional basis.

  • They may also be allowed to write selection tests at these camps.

  • However, they cannot represent India in IMO, EGMO, or APMO under the current rules.

  • This policy may change based on future court orders or government instructions.

  • Residence and Study Requirement

  • The student must have been residing and studying in India since October 30, 2022 or earlier.

  • Alternatively, the student must have been studying in an Indian school system since October 30, 2022 or earlier.

Students Studying Abroad

  • Students living abroad who are studying in the Indian school system may appear for the IOQM 2026 or the pre-regional mathematical olympiad.

  • Such students must come to India to write IOQM 2026.

  • If they qualify, they must also come to India for further stages such as RMO and INMO.

  • Such students will be considered enrolled from Delhi-NCR.

  • The same selection rules of Delhi-NCR will apply to them.

  • Students must bear their own travel expenses to and from India.

Class 12 Board Exam Rule

  • Students must not have passed or been scheduled to appear for the Class 12 board examination before October 30, 2025.

  • Students cannot cancel, forfeit, or hide their Class 12 board results just to meet the eligibility rules for IOQM or the pre-regional mathematical olympiad.

  • Any student using such methods will be disqualified from IOQM 2026.

University Admission Rule

  • Students must not have begun studies at a university or an equivalent institution by June 1, 2025.

  • Students planning to start university-level studies by that date are also not eligible.

Special Rule for INMO 2026 Awardees

  • INMO 2026 awardees can directly appear for INMO 2027 without qualifying through IOQM 2026 and RMO 2026.

  • However, they must meet the required age criteria.

  • They must not have started or planned to start university studies by June 1, 2026.

  • They must also satisfy the eligibility rules for IMO 2027 and EGMO 2027.

  • OCI students are not eligible to represent India in IMO 2027 and EGMO 2027.

Important Note

Students are responsible for ensuring they meet all IOQM 2026 eligibility criteria. If a student is later found ineligible at any stage of the Olympiad programme, they may be disqualified.

Pre RMO Syllabus: IOQM 2026-27 Latest Syllabus

Students preparing for IOQM 2026-27 and further Mathematics Olympiad stages, such as RMO, INMO, IMO, EGMO, and APMO, should first be clear with the NCERT Mathematics concepts of Classes 8, 9, and 10. Along with these basics, students must pay special attention to higher-level areas of problem-solving, such as algebra, plane geometry, combinatorics, and number theory.

The difficulty level increases as students move from IOQM to RMO, then INMO, and finally international-level Olympiads like IMO. So, students should prepare the syllabus with strong concepts, regular practice, and Olympiad-style problem-solving.
