Class 2 English NCERT Chapter 8 ‘The Mumbai Musicians’- A Brief Summary

The chapter, ‘The Mumbai Musicians’ is a delightfully enjoyable short story. This wonderful story in Marigold is an adaptation of the story “The Bremen Town Musicians” by Grimm. This chapter tells us a story of four animals - a donkey, a dog, a cat and a cock. Through this story, we discover the chapter’s themes of passion, hard-work and wit.

The chapter begins with our first character- Goopu, the donkey. Goopu had worked for several years in a farmer’s house. He had carried many heavy sacks of corn and sugarcane from the farm to the factory. So, due to working for many years, Goopu has now become very old and tired. One day, the kind farmer praised Goopu and told him that he is a good donkey. The farmer gave Goopu a sack of corn and told him to go and see the world before becoming too old.

Goopu said goodbye to the farmer and set off towards Mumbai. He thought to himself, “I am good at music. I will go to Mumbai and be a musician there”. On his way, he met Doopu, the dog. Doopu asked Goopu where he was going. So, Goopu told Doopu and asked him if he would like to come too. Doopu agreed to it and they set off on the dusty road to Mumbai.

On their way, they met with a cat this time. The cat was named Furry. Goopu and Doopu asked Furry if he would like to come with the two and become a musician. Furry replied to them by agreeing to come along and so the three went off together to become Mumbai musicians. Then, the three met Cuckoo, the cock and Cuckoo told them that he loves music and he wished to join their band. And, with that, all four of them reached a house with light.

After walking all those miles, the four became very tired and hungry. So, they peeped in through the house’s window and saw a table full of delicious food. So, they decided to sing to let the people inside the house know that the four of them were the Mumbai musicians. But, when they sang, the people inside thought that ghosts were scaring them and so they ran away as fast as they could!

And, with the people out of the building, Goopu, Doopu and Furry went into the house and ate the food, till they couldn’t eat anymore.

5. What is the best method for solving the 'Let's Write' exercises for Chapter 8?

As per the CBSE pattern for Class 2, the best method to solve writing exercises is to first understand the question's requirement. For questions that ask you to describe something, recall the exact describing words (adjectives) used in the chapter, such as 'tired and old' for Goopu or 'delicious' for the food. Always write in complete sentences.

6. Why did the people in the house mistake the animals' singing for a ghost?

The people likely mistook the singing for a ghost because the sounds were very unusual and frightening when heard together. A donkey's bray, a dog's bark, a cat's meow, and a cock's crow all at once created a loud and scary noise that they had never heard before, leading them to think something supernatural was outside.

7. How does the story 'The Mumbai Musicians' teach the importance of teamwork?

The story shows that teamwork helps achieve goals that are difficult to achieve alone. Individually, the animals were old and tired. However, by combining their strengths (their voices), they were able to scare away the people and get food and a safe place to rest. This shows that cooperation can lead to success.

8. While solving NCERT exercises, how can you identify the opposites (antonyms) in this chapter?

To find opposites, look for describing words and think of a word that means the reverse. This is a common exercise in NCERT solutions. For example:

  • The opposite of old (like Goopu) is young.
  • The opposite of heavy (like the sacks) is light.
  • The opposite of inside (where the animals slept) is outside.
