2. Answer the following questions in about 30 words.

(i) Does India need to have more than one standard time? If yes, why do you

think so?

Answer: Yes, India may benefit from having more than one standard time due to its vast east-west extent. The easternmost and westernmost regions of the country experience a time difference of nearly two hours in sunrise and sunset. For example, the sun rises much earlier in Arunachal Pradesh than in Gujarat. Countries with large longitudinal extents, such as the United States, Canada, and Russia, follow multiple time zones. Since India extends across approximately 30° of longitude, introducing more than one standard time could improve daylight utilization and increase productivity in different regions.

(ii) What are the implications of India having a long coastline?

Answer: India has a coastline of about 7,516.6 km, which provides significant geographical and economic advantages. Its central location in the Indian Ocean enables easy maritime connections with Europe, Africa, West Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia. The peninsular shape of India supports international trade, fishing, and port development. Additionally, India’s strategic position along important sea routes enhances its importance in global commerce and strengthens its role in regional and international relations.

(iii) How is the latitudinal spread of India advantageous to her?

Answer: India’s latitudinal extent offers several advantages. The Tropic of Cancer passes through the country, dividing it into tropical and subtropical regions. This results in diverse climatic conditions and rich biodiversity across different parts of India. The variation in climate supports a wide range of crops, vegetation, and wildlife. Moreover, the difference in day and night duration from south to north contributes to geographical diversity, making India a land of varied natural environments.

(iv) While the sun rises earlier in the east, say Nagaland and also sets earlier, how do the watches at Kohima and New Delhi show the same time?

Answer: Although the sun rises and sets earlier in eastern states such as Nagaland, both Kohima and New Delhi follow the same time because India uses a single standard time zone. The Indian Standard Time (IST) is based on the Standard Meridian of 82°30′ East longitude, which passes near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. This uniform time system ensures consistency in administration, transportation, communication, and other activities across the entire country, regardless of regional differences in sunrise and sunset timings.
