NIT Cutoff 2026: JoSAA Rank‑Wise Cutoff for Tier 1, 2, 3, and 4 NITs

JEE Main NIT Cutoff 2026: The round-wise JEE Main NIT cutoff 2026 for BTech courses will be published after JoSAA counselling concludes. On this page, candidates will be able to check the latest as well as previous years’ JEE Main NIT cutoffs released by JoSAA for all 31 NITs.

The NIT cutoff is the minimum JEE Main rank required to secure a seat in a particular branch and institute. For every NIT and BTech specialisation, JoSAA releases category-wise opening and closing ranks. These vary for each round of counselling based on factors such as the number of applicants, exam difficulty level, total seats available and previous year trends.

Engineering aspirants aiming for admission to top NITs must score at or above the prescribed cutoff ranks in JEE Main 2026. Only candidates who meet the minimum NIT cutoff will be considered eligible for seat allotment as per their JEE Main 2026 ranks.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts JEE Main twice a year. As per the JEE Main 2026 exam schedule, Session 1 was held from January 21 to 28, while Session 2 will be conducted from April 2 to 9, 2026. JEE Main 2026 Session 1 result has already been declared by NTA.

On this page, you can:

  • Check the institute-wise NIT cutoffs 2026 and previous years

  • Compare category-wise opening and closing ranks for CSE, ECE and other core branches

  • Analyse JoSAA trends to estimate a safe rank for NIT admission 2026.

What is NIT Cutoff?

NIT cutoff refers to the minimum JEE Main All India Rank (AIR) required to secure admission into a specific branch at a National Institute of Technology (NIT) through JoSAA counselling.

Each year, two key cutoff values are published:

  • Opening Rank: the best (lowest) rank at which a seat is allotted in Round 1 of JoSAA.

  • Closing Rank: the last (highest) rank at which a seat is allotted in the final counselling round (usually Round 6). This is the value most students use to assess their chances of admission.

Cutoffs are published separately for every combination of NIT × Branch × Category × Quota (Home State / Other State).

This means the same NIT can have very different cutoffs for a General-OS candidate compared to an OBC-NCL-HS candidate. Always identify your exact combination before comparing NIT cutoffs.

Cutoff Trend Insight

  • Top NIT CSE closing ranks remain below 5k for premier institutes like Trichy and Warangal.

  • ECE usually closes between 5k–10k in top NITs.

  • Core branches such as Mechanical and Civil generally close between 15k–35k depending on institute ranking.

  • Lower-tier NITs may allow admission beyond 1 lakh rank, especially under Home State quota.

These trends indicate that competition for top branches stays consistent each year, making previous cutoff analysis essential before filling JoSAA choices.

Factors Affecting NIT Cutoff 2026

  • Number of JEE Main Applicants: More qualified candidates in Joint Entrance Examination Main increase competition, leading to more competitive (lower) cutoff ranks.

  • Difficulty Level of Exam: Tough paper → relatively relaxed ranks; Easy paper → higher scores → more competitive closing ranks.

  • Seat Matrix by JoSAA: Changes in seat availability by Joint Seat Allocation Authority directly impact cutoffs (more seats → higher closing ranks; fewer seats → tighter cutoffs).

  • Popularity of Institute: Top NITs like National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, National Institute of Technology Surathkal, and National Institute of Technology Warangal close at lower ranks due to high demand.

  • Branch Demand: CSE, AI, Data Science, and ECE have much lower closing ranks compared to Mechanical, Civil, or Metallurgy.

  • Home State vs Other State Quota: 50% Home State reservation allows relatively higher ranks compared to Other State quota.

  • JoSAA Counselling Trends: Choice filling order, float/withdraw options, and seat acceptance behaviour cause rank variations across counselling rounds

Home State Quota in NIT Admission and Its Advantage

During JoSAA counselling, National Institutes of Technology reserve 50% of their seats for Home State candidates. A Home State student is one who has passed Class 12 from the same state where the NIT is located.

This reservation significantly improves admission chances for eligible students because cutoff ranks for Home State are usually less competitive than Other State quota.

How Home State Quota Helps Students

  • Students competing under the Home State quota face fewer applicants compared to the national pool.

  • The closing rank for the same branch can be much higher for Home State students.

  • This means students with relatively lower ranks may still secure admission in good NITs.

Example of Home State Advantage

  • A student from Tamil Nadu applying to NIT Trichy under Home State quota may get Mechanical or Civil branch at a rank where an Other State student might not.

  • Similarly, a Punjab student applying to NIT Jalandhar may receive admission at a higher rank compared to outside-state candidates.

Important Points About Home State Quota

  • Applies only if Class 12 board exam is from that state.

  • Valid for all JoSAA rounds.

  • Does not guarantee admission, but improves chances.

  • Students should still fill backup institutes to stay safe.

Understanding quota rules helps students make smarter JoSAA choice filling decisions and increases the probability of getting a preferred college.

NIT Cutoff 2026 Complete Guide for JoSAA Counselling

Understanding the NIT Cutoff 2026 is essential for making the right JoSAA counselling choices. By comparing the latest Round-1 opening and closing ranks with previous year trends and expected safe ranks, students can realistically shortlist colleges and branches based on their JEE Main rank.

Since cutoffs vary by institute popularity, branch demand, quota, and counselling rounds, students should always include a mix of dream, target, and safe NIT options while filling their choices. Checking cutoff trends carefully can significantly improve the chances of securing admission in a preferred B.Tech program.

FAQs on NIT Cutoff 2026: Tier-Wise Opening and Closing Ranks for B.Tech. Admission

1. What is the NIT cutoff in JEE Main?

It’s the minimum All India Rank (AIR) you need in JEE Main to get a seat in a specific NIT + branch + category + quota (HS/OS) through JoSAA.

2. Is NIT admission based on marks or rank?

Admission is based on JEE Main AIR only, not raw marks. Marks are used just to estimate rank.

3. What are the opening rank and closing rank?

Opening rank = first (best) rank that gets a seat.
Closing rank = the last (worst) rank that gets a seat in the final round.

4. What are Tier 1, 2, 3, 4 NITs?

An unofficial classification based on placements, cutoffs, infrastructure, and preference. Tier 1 are most competitive; Tier 4 are relatively easier to get.

5. What JEE Main marks are good for top NIT CSE?

Roughly 160–170+ marks (≥95 percentile) are usually needed for CSE in NIT Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal for General–OS.

6. What is a safe rank for Tier 1 NIT CSE (General–OS)?

Generally AIR up to ~13,000, with top ones like Trichy/Surathkal/Warangal closing near 1,100–2,600.

7. Can I get an NIT with AIR 50,000–80,000?

Yes, usually in Tier 2–4 NITs and/or core branches; chances improve with Home State quota.

8. Can I get an NIT with rank worse than 1,00,000?

Difficult, but possible in Tier 4 NITs, less popular branches, and HS quota; also try CSAB Special Rounds and other colleges.

9. How does Home State quota work?

50% seats in each NIT are for Home State students (Class 12 from that state). HS cutoffs are usually higher, so ranks can be more relaxed.

10. Does the Home State quota guarantee a seat?

No. It only improves chances. You still need a rank within the HS closing rank for your branch and category.

11. What are the typical trends for top branches?

  • CSE (top NITs): usually < 5,000 AIR

  • ECE (top NITs): about 5,000–10,000 AIR

  • Core (Mech/Civil/Electrical): often 15,000–35,000 AIR

12. How can I use previous year cutoffs?

Compare your rank with 2024 & 2025 closing ranks to make a dream–target–safe list of NITs and branches.

13. When will official NIT cutoff 2026 be released?

After JoSAA 2026 counselling ends. Till then, use past cutoffs + expected safe ranks.

14. How should I plan JoSAA choices using cutoffs?

Know your rank + category + HS/OS, then fill:

  • Some dream options (slightly above your rank)

  • Many target options (around your rank)

  • Enough safe options (well below your rank)

15. Is a lower-tier NIT degree less valuable?

The NIT tag is strong everywhere. Tier mainly affects cutoffs and placements; your skills, CGPA, and internships matter most for outcomes.
