We all know that the things around us are considered as matter. The quantity of a matter is defined on the basis of mass. It means mass and matter are the same as without mass, matter is nothing. But did you know matter and mass are different? Did you understand the difference between matter and mass?

Matter has two properties which are mass and volume. Mass is defined as the amount or quantity of matter whereas volume is defined as the quantity of space covered by matter. In this article, we are going to learn about matter, mass, how they are related, their definition, what is quantity of matter and the scientific meaning of matter.

What Is Matter?

Matter is defined as a group of particles which has mass and occupies some space. All types of matter are composed of atoms. Atoms are extremely small chemically indivisible particles. There are so many different kinds of matter which are organized by their composition and properties. Composition is the types and amounts of atoms that make up a sample of matter. Properties are the characteristics that give each substance a unique identity.

Composition Of Matter

Matter is mainly composed of atoms. Atoms are the building blocks of any object in this world. Further, atoms are composed of electrons, protons and neutrons.

What Is Mass?

Mass is defined as the quantity of matter. It is the amount or number of atoms or molecules a matter is composed of. Mass decide the amount of gravitational force a particular object will experience. Mass is measured in SI base unit kilogram (kg) but us is not similar to weight in physics.

Difference Between Mass And Matter

Mass and matter can be differentiated on the basis of the following points.

Matter

Mass

Matter is something which occupies space and has mass

Mass is the property by which the quantity of a matter is measured

Matter is visible.

It is a measure, thus cannot be seen and only measured.

It is measured in different units.

It is measured in kilograms.

Mass has different forms

Matter has different stares

Matter can be changed due to some chemical reactions

Mass is fixed and never changes

Matter Has Mass

As we have read earlier that matter is composed of group of atoms and mass is the quantity of matter. Thus, it is clear that matter has mass. Matter cannot exist without mass is the quantity and matter is composed of some amount of atoms.

Examples Of Matter

Everything around us which occupies space is matter. All humans, animals, trees, as well as mom living things such as car, bus, table, etc. is matter.

Important Questions

Q1. How are matter and mass related?

Ans. Mass is the amount of any component and matter is the component which has mass. Thus, they are interrelated to each other.

Q2. What is the quantity of matter?

Ans. Quantity of matter is basically a measure which shows the number of atoms a matter is composed off.

Q3. What is the scientific meaning of matter?

Ans. Matter is defined as the collection of molecules or atoms.

Conclusion

All matter is composed of atoms. Atom are extremely small chemically indivisible particle. In Greek coming concept, matter is “that which cannot be divided". There is so many different kinds of matter which are organized by their composition and properties. Composition is the types and amounts of atoms that make up a sample of matter. Properties are the characteristics that give each substance a unique identity.

The example of matter includes all the things around us which occupy some space in the environment.

FAQs on Difference Between Mass and Matter for JEE Main 2024

1. What are the Different States of Matter? Describe Bose-Einstein Condensates and Plasma State Briefly.

The three classical states of matter are solid, liquid and gas. Plasma, Bose-Einstein condensates, Fermionic condensates are the other possible states.

Bose-Einstein Condensates: It is a state of matter where the atoms are cooled down to the near temperature of absolute zero. They do not possess any energy. They come together forming a lump. The whole group of atoms starts behaving as a single one. The particle attaining this state is called a boson.

Plasma: This state was first described by Irving Langmuir, and is known as the fourth state of matter. When energy is added in the form of heat to a gas, it forms Plasma. Plasma is a positively charged, ionized particle from which electrons peel away due to extreme heat.

2. What is Inertial and Gravitational Mass?

Mass can be calculated or measured in seven different ways. These different concepts of mass are proportional to each other and sometimes equal. The proportionality between these values provides the rough concept of mass.

  • Inertial mass: This is defined as the resistance of an object to the acceleration resulting from the force applied upon that object. The body with higher resistance will have greater inertial mass, while the body that accelerates easily has smaller inertial mass.

  • Gravitational mass: Gravitational mass is measured by the force experienced by every object on earth by earth’s gravitational pull. Earth’s gravitational pull is equal for every object irrespective of size and position.

3. Which state of matter has mass?

There are mainly three states of matter, solid, liquid and gas. All the three states matter has mass. This can be understood with the help of some easy examples. For example, if we place a brick which is a solid, a glass of water which is a liquid and aan inflated balloon which is contain gas on a weighing machine, then the meter scale will show some values which proves that all the three states of matter has mass.

4. What is the difference between mass and weight of an object?

Although mass and weight have the same SI base unit and measuring instruments, they both are different from each other through a major point. Mass is the property of a matter which does not change according to change in location with respect to gravity whereas weight is something which changes according to change in location with respect to gravity. For example, your weight will be different on earth and moon but mass will remain the same.
