Summary of HC Verma Solutions Part 1 Chapter 15: Wave Motion and Waves on a String

Wave motion is a common phenomenon in nature, and this chapter examines its properties. HC Verma explains amplitude, frequency, and wavelength and how these characteristics define wave motion. He discusses the propagation of waves on a string and the concept of wave superposition. The principles of reflection, refraction, and interference of waves are explored with practical examples.

Waves and Their Characteristics

As waveforms, waves possess certain characteristics that are observed immediately. An emphasis on amplitude comes first. Alternatively, you can look at the amplitude as half of the distance from crest to trough. As well as observing the wavelength, we also observe the period of the wave (similar to peak to peak or valley to valley). We denote the wavelength by the Greek letter  λ.

It can be described as the number of waves passing a fixed point in a unit of time - the frequency can be thought of as the number of crests that pass per unit of time. On a mathematical level, we observe:

Different sine wave frequencies. The red wave has a low sine frequency, and the cycle repeats very rarely. In contrast, we refer to the purple wave as having a high sine frequency. It is noteworthy that time increases horizontally.

 f = 1/T

Oscillations are measured in terms of T. Frequency and wavelength can also be considered in relation to the wave's speed. Hence,.

v = fλ

In the following equations, v refers to the wave speed, or, more commonly, the phase velocity, the means of propagating the wave's phase through space. One of the frequency components of the wave travels at a particular velocity. For a component characterized by such a phase velocity, any given phase of the wave (for example, the crest) would appear to move at the phase velocity.

Last but not least, the group velocity of a wave is the velocity at which the modulation or envelope of the wave - the overall shape of its amplitudes - propagates through space. This is shown in the following figure, where the overall shape (or "envelope") propagates away from the center, while the phase velocity is negative.

Types of Waves

The sound that we hear, every photon of light that enters our eyes, the wind that blows the grass, and the regular beat of the tides are the same thing as waves. There are waves everywhere.  Often when people first think about waves, they envision physical, visible waves such as those thrown into water by throwing a rock. In addition to their characteristic properties specific to their type, these waves have characteristics that they share with abstract waves such as sound waves and light (electron) waves.

Wave Type: Longitudinal Transverse Surface 0.

At their most fundamental level, waves operate as disturbances that propagate energy through a medium. It is the interactions of the particles within the medium that determine the propagation of energy. There is no net motion of particles as waves pass through, although particles move when waves pass. A wave is said to pass after the particles return to their original position once it has passed. As a result, waves propagate energy rather than matter.

Waves exhibit specific characteristics based on their types. Wave types can then be distinguished based on these characteristics.  As a wave propagates in a certain direction, it is characterized by particle orientation relative to its direction of motion.

There are three categories:

  • The particles in a long-term wave follow the energy as it moves.  Sound waves moving through the air are an example of a long-term wave.

  • Energy is moving parallel to particles that are moving at right angles (perpendicular) to it. A wave is an example of this type of wave when it moves through a solid object such as a rope or a trampoline.

  • Surface waves - particles move throughout the surface of this type of wave at interfaces. cur at interfaces.  The ocean waves and the ripples of a cup of water are both examples of waves.  A particle's motion diminishes with distance from the interface when it occurs at an interface.  As the particles move further from the interface, they become less active, until they stop moving or transferring energy until they are at some distance from the surface.
