ICC Champions Trophy

The Champions Trophy, often known as the "Mini World Cup", was first held in 1998 by the International Cricket Council. It began as the ICC Knockout Tournament, which was scheduled to take place across four years. The goal was to generate cash in non-Test-playing countries, with the first two editions conducted in Kenya and Bangladesh, respectively. The event was later conducted in major cricket nations such as England and India due to its financial success. Since the 2009 edition, only the top 8 countries in the ICC ODI rankings have been allowed to compete. Six months previous to the commencement of the award, the rankings were cut off. After the 2017 edition, the event was cancelled to retain only one worldwide tournament for each of the three forms. The ICC, on the other hand, confirmed in 2021 that the Champions Trophy will return in 2025 and 2029. The list of ICC champions trophy winners held so far will be included in this article.

ICC Champions Trophy History

The ICC KnockOut Tournament was first held in 1998, and it has been held every four years since then. The name of the tournament was changed to the Champions Trophy in the year 2002. The Champions Trophy was created by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to provide cash for the development of cricket in non-test playing countries, with the inaugural events conducted in Bangladesh and Kenya. The event has been staged in countries like India and England as a cash generator for the ICC, and the number of teams has been decreased to eight due to its huge economic success. The competition was planned as a knock-out tournament to keep it short and not detract from the World Cup's merit and importance. It was dubbed the mini-World Cup since it contained all of the ICC's full members. The event has featured a round-robin structure since 2002, followed by a few knockout games, but it still takes place within a short period, around two weeks.

ICC Champions Trophy Format

The Champions Trophy was held every two years until 2006. The tournament was originally planned to take place in Pakistan in 2008, but owing to security concerns, it was moved to South Africa in 2009. It has been held every four years since then, much as the World Cup. In some respects, the Champions Trophy varies from the World Cup.

The Champions Trophy matches take place over a two-and-a-half-week period, but the World Cup might go up to a month. The Champions Trophy has fewer teams than the World Cup, with the most recent edition of the World Cup having ten teams and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy having eight teams. Twelve teams competed in a round-robin tournament in four groups of three in 2002 and 2004, with the best team from each group progressing to the semi-finals. To win the event, a team would need to play only four games (two in each pool, a semi-final, and a final). The Knockout events had a different format than the Champions Trophy tournaments. With no pools and the loser of each game being eliminated, the competition was a straight knockout. In 1998, just eight games were played, while in 2000, only ten games were played.

Since 2006, eight teams have competed in two round-robin pools of four, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. If you lose a single match, you might be knocked out of the competition. In the current version of the event, a total of 15 matches are played throughout two and a half weeks.
