A Glance at Chapter 7- From The Window

This chapter is a continuation of Omana’s journey to Kerala. It begins with her waking up in the morning, after an early night’s sleep. They had reached Madgaon. Her father said that they will be passing through the state of Goa. They got off the station and had some hot tea, and refilled their bottles. She then described that she saw a beautiful scene outside the window. Then, the train passed through a level of crossing, and there were many people, cars, trucks, auto-rickshaws, and cycle on both sides. 

The last few hours of the journey were very exciting. After breakfast, she climbed on the upper berth and read comics. Then, she passed through a tunnel that went right through the mountain.

The Afternoon Scene:

Now and then, they passed four smaller tunnels, and she started to enjoy it. In the afternoon, she described the scene outside the window which comprised coconut trees and green fields. 

Scene of the Night:

Then, at night they started to pack since the train was about to reach Kottayam. That day they were going to Valiyamma's house and the next day they would take a bus and go to Ammumma's Village. Now, at this moment they all were very tired since they had been on the train for two days. And in the end, She ends by saying that she will write again on reaching Ammumma’s house.

Finally, they reached Kottayam at night.

Omana saw that it was bright and sunny outside and then suddenly everything became dark. She felt a little cold inside which scared her. However, the lights on the train came on but it was dark outside. Then somebody on the train said that it was a tunnel. For Omana, the tunnel seemed to go on for a very long time and when they were outside it was sunny, bright, and green again. She has crossed about four smaller tunnels after that. This experience of moving through the tunnels fascinated her.

The following steps can be taken to save petrol and diesel:

  • Switch off the engines of your vehicles while waiting at the level crossings.

  • Carpooling and offering/ asking for lifts.
