What Is JEE Main Paper 1 And Paper 2?

Every year, JEE (Joint Entrance Exams) Mains are conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) to provide eligible aspirants with admissions in various courses like B.Tech. B.Arch., B.Plan & B.E. The successful candidates in the JEE Main can secure admission into the prestigious engineering colleges in the country, including NITs, IIITs, Government Funded Technical Institutes, and CFTIs, etc.


A candidate must score well in paper 1 and paper 2 in JEE Main to enroll in JEE Advanced. Paper 1 is for admissions in B.Tech/B.E courses, whereas Paper 2 has further two parts - Paper 2A for B.Arch courses, and Paper 2B for B.Plan courses.

How many papers are in JEE Main? Below is the JEE Main exam pattern for Paper 1 and Paper 2, as announced by the conducting authority on the official website.

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E/B.Tech)

m Paper 1 for B.E/B. Tech courses consist of 90 MCQs for a total of 300 marks. It has two sections for each subject - MCQs (Section A) and Numerical (Section B). 


Section A covers 20 questions from each subject with a compulsion to attempt. Whereas Section B consists of 10 questions, out of which candidates can select any five questions to attempt.

What is JEE Main Paper 2? The JEE Main exam Paper 2 pattern is different for B.Arch and B.Planning. 


The candidates will get 3 hours to attempt both papers. There will be 82 questions in Paper 2A and 105 MCQs in Paper 2B for a total of 400 marks.

B.Arch (Paper 2A):

  • 2 questions will be there from the Drawing section to evaluate the drawing skills of the students.

  • The Mathematics section contains 20 MCQs and 10 numerical-based questions.

  • Last, the Aptitude Section contains 50 questions.

B.Plan (Paper 2B):

  • The Planning section contains 25 questions 

  • There will be 20 MCQs and 10 numerical questions in the Mathematic section

  • Finally, the Aptitude section contains 50 questions.
