Thousands of years ago, Bharata, the son of King Dasharatha, was returning to Ayodhya. He was a bit sceptical about his return. He was not feeling very good. So, he was worried about his family. But he wanted to return to his family to see if everything was alright.
When he returned to Ayodhya with his brother, he stopped at the city's gate. He found the city gloomy and quiet. Ayodhya had always been a lively city. But when Bharata found the city gloomy and quiet, he thought something wrong must have happened. So, he grew to be more sceptical.
The more he entered the city, the more he grew suspicious. He found no music, no light. No one came to greet them when they arrived at the palace. Overall, the city that was once so lively and happy now looked lifeless. This made Bharata and Shatrughna suspect even more than before. So, they rushed to the palace to find out what misfortune had fallen on them.
At first, Bharata went into king Dasharatha’s chamber. But he found no one here. He grew even more anxious now. But he went to Kaikeyi’s room to ask what had happened.
When he saw his mother inside the room, he became very happy. He touched his mother’s feet to seek her blessing and asked her, “Where is my father? I cannot see brother Rama. Where is he?” At first, Kaikeyi was unwilling to tell him but seeing Bharata so eager to know about his brother and father’s whereabouts, she said, “your father has passed away, and your brothers Rama and Lakshman have been banished from the kingdom for fourteen years.” Bharata was so shocked to hear all these that he could not utter a word. “Now, you are the new king of this kingdom.”
When he learned that it was his mother who made Rama and Lakshman go to the forest, he became so furious. He looked at his mother with hateful eyes and said, “Rama is the rightful and the most deserving king of this kingdom. No one can snatch that right from him. That is why I will never be the king of this kingdom.”
Bharat felt so ashamed to hear about his mother's doing. He was now a grieving son and a brother. He went to see Kausalya, Rama’s mother. At first, Kausaklya did not trust Bharata and said, “Now, you have the whole kingdom to rule. I hope you will be happy in life.” Bharata was so ashamed of his mother’s deceit that he fell at Kausalya’s feet and asked for forgiveness. He informed Kausalya that he knew nothing about it. Kausalya saw the genuine pain and embarrassment in Bharat’s eyes and decided to trust him.
As the family's eldest son, Bharata performed his father’s last rights and declared that he would return to his brothers and bring them back to the palace.
