There are two canals which pass through the city of Bikaner. These are the Ganges Canal and the Indira Gandhi Canal. The Ganges Canal was completed in the year 1928 whereas the Indira Gandhi Canal was completed in the year 1987.

The city experiences a hot desert climate because it is situated in the middle of the Thar desert. The city receives very little rainfall and also experiences extreme temperatures. An example of this is that during summers the temperature may exceed even 48 degree C and in winters the temperature may fall below the freezing temperature.

The 2011 census estimated the population of Bikaner at more than 6,00,000. The city was placed in the top 70 major cities of India and 5th in Rajasthan. The literacy rate of the city stands at 79 percent.

The region is highly renowned for its wildlife as there are around 600 vultures at Jorbeer and the city acts as a host to another 1200 migratory vultures. Apart from this the city is also famous for its cuisine.
