Hint: India receives an average rainfall of 300–650 millimetres (11.8–25.6 in) every year. India is a huge country because of which, while some parts of the country receive heavy rainfall , others receive scanty rainfall. Distribution of rainfall is different in different regions as factors like temperature, humidity, ocean current , distance inland from the coast and mountain ranges, vary from region to region.
Complete answer: Seasonal reversal of wind which usually causes rainfall is called monsoon. India receives rainfall under southwest and northeast monsoons.
Let us look at the options given to us-
Option A- North west monsoon is incorrect answer as there is nothing called north west monsoons. There are north east monsoons in India. This is also called the winter monsoons.
Option B-South West monsoon is the correct answer as 75% of the country receives rainfall under this monsoon. It starts in the month of June when moist air from the southern Indian ocean blows northwards because of the low pressure zone created by the heating of the Tibetan Plateau and shift of the Inter Tropical convergence zone over the Ganga plains. This is also called the rainy season and lasts from June to September.
Option C- South east monsoon is incorrect as there is nothing as south east monsoons in India.
Option D- East West monsoon is incorrect. Monsoons are usually named after the direction of the winds and as east and west are opposite directions , there is no monsoon that is called east west monsoon.
Therefore the correct answer is option B-south west monsoon season.
Note: Northeast monsoon lasts from October to December and states like Tamil Nadu , Andhra Pradesh and some parts of Kerala receive rainfall. Mawsynram , in east Khasi hills of Meghalaya, receives the highest rainfall in India. On the other hand, places like Jaiselmar and Leh receive the lowest rainfall in India. These places receive less than 50cm rainfall every year.
