Hint: The American Civil war was fought between the northern and Southern States. The Southern States did not want the north to decide or make laws for them as a result many Southern States decided to form their own country called Confederacy. The North on the other hand wanted to stay as one United country and so the war began between the two which lasted from 1860 to 1865.

Complete answer: In the mid of the nineteenth century the United States was experiencing tremendous growth and economic differences between the two regions, Northern and Southern.
The north had an enormous industrial advantage than in the south with many large cities established there. By 1860 the one quarter population of the northern region lived in urban areas. The percentage of labourers working in agriculture dropped drastically and slavery was no more practiced and replaced in the cities by immigrant labour from Europe. In addition to this majority of immigrants settled in the North rather than the South. Transportation was also easy which gave rise to the economy of the Northern region. The north controlled the navy and the seas under the hands of the union which came as a blockade for the south.
The South had a great nucleus of trained officers and could produce all the food needed. Large population in the South is dependent on agriculture with 80% of black enslaved people working on farms. Only one tenth of the population of the Southern region lived in the urban areas and transportation between the cities was also difficult. Tensions started over the the moral issue of slavery. The southern States wanted to assert their authority over the federal government so they could amend and abolish federal laws that didn't support them and especially those laws which were interfering with the south's attempt to keep slaves and take them wherever they wanted to. The South wanted to take slavery into the western countries while the North abolished it and wanted to keep them open to white labor only. This resulted in the formation of Republican party in 1860 with Abraham Lincoln as its president. It was a clear signal to the decline of the influence of the southern States. And finally on April 12, confederate artillery fired the first shots of the Civil war.

Note: Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by the confederates and the war was won by the north union. The economy of the southern region as well as the city, farms and plantations were destroyed badly. After the war the union was preserved and the 13th amendment to the constitution was ratified in 1865 which officially abolished slavery in the entire country.
